Weaving stories with light and sound

I've always had a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling, which, at its core, forges a connection of meaning that resonates with the human condition.

A few weeks ago, I witnessed a master storyteller using the piano to convey a thousand books' worth of emotions and tales. Dutch pianist Joep Beving performed his work 'Hermetism' as part of Illuminate Adelaide. Created with multidisciplinary artist Boris Acket, the work explores the connection between light and sound. The performance began with a stage featuring nothing more than an upright piano and a minimalist, inviting light display above the performer.

After an emotional week full of ups and downs—the unexpected spices of life that give it flavour—this performance was a much-needed high point. Joep started the performance, no words spoken, easing into his neo-classical musings the same way a master of their art starts anything: uncomplicated, concentrated and meaningful. After fifteen minutes of each short composition gracefully flowing from one to the next, Joep turned to the audience and humbly welcomed the crowd.

The accompanying light display was reminiscent of birds flying through a night sky, their movements spiralling and building in intensity as the performance progressed. Joep took several breaks to talk to the audience about heartfelt issues such as losing a close friend and conflicts and injustices enveloping the world. When introducing his piece 'Sleeping Lotus', a composition he wrote for his daughter, Joep reflected on how easy it is to take for granted the privilege of going to bed at night knowing you and your family are safe amidst ongoing global conflicts. The brief monologue and graceful return to his hypnotising melodies brought home the power of music and how it can transcend life's negative aspects that are so easy to get wrapped up in at times.

Overall, Joep Beving's performance was a masterful display of the power of music and the art of storytelling. With just his instrument and a captivated audience, he delivered a memorable performance that will be talked about long after his melodies have flown from your mind like a bird in the night sky.
