Wellbeing Grants 2024

The Student Health and Wellbeing Grants program provides funding to initiatives that facilitate wellbeing amongst University of Adelaide students. A total of $15 000 was awarded for 25 local projects, collectively addressing all eight dimensions of the Wellbeing Wheel. 

Applications were evaluated based on their alignment with one or more areas of the wheel. The wellbeing grants assessment panel were committed to taking a well-rounded approach, and supported a diverse range of projects, spread across the year.

  • Yoga props

    This grant funds Yoga props to enhance the accessibility of weekly vinyasa yoga classes on campus. 

    All students and staff are welcome to attend - just rock up the Braggs Level 2 conference room at 4:45 pm Tuesdays. The first class is free for students.

  • Play for pride: brunch

    A brunch event to unite athletes, advocates and allies in support of LGBTIQA+ representation within the sporting community. This event includes a panel discussion, entertainment and networking opportunities to celebrate inclusion and diversity in sport.

  • Eat the rainbow: fruit and veg stall

    A food stall designed to break down barriers for students, allowing them to pick up fresh, healthy whole fruit and vegetables to eat or take home and cook with.

    Head down to the Hub near Ask Adelaide and keep an eye out for the stall.

  • Cycle syncing - enhancing female students' wellbeing at university

    A workshop that unpacks the relationship between menstrual cycles and overall wellbeing. Participants can learn about how to approach their menstrual cycles to improve health, physical and academic performance.

  • Brain food box

    Providing ‘brain food’ boxes with healthy snacks for medical students post simulation sessions.

    These items are for medical students to enjoy at the conclusion of their simulation sessions.

  • Adelaide University Wing Chun Kung Fu Club

    The session will start with a 20-minute session introducing the lineage of Wing Chun in Australia, in the George Murray building, followed by an hour physical training session on the Barr Smith Lawn.

  • Survive and thrive: a workshop for first-year female PhD students

    This workshop will bring together students to discuss challenges commonly faced by first year female PhD students. Group and individual activities will allow students to connect and learn from peer mentors.

  • "Sushi" making at Roseworthy College

    This project aims to highlight cultural diversity and bring domestic and international students together over food. Students at Roseworthy College will be invited to help prepare, cook and enjoy a sushi lunch. This project will give students an opportunity to learn new cooking skills, make new friends, relax and gain a deeper appreciation for different cultures.

    All Roseworthy students are welcome to attend.

  • Seed sessions at Roseworthy

    This grant enables Roseworthy students the opportunity to attend “The Seed Sessions”.

    Four presentations over over two dinners will explore different ways of navigating adversity and common life challenges.

    The speakers use imaginative, interactive concepts to explore mindset, perspective, learned helplessness and a form of personal growth termed shadow work.

  • Panel discussion: Abortion is healthcare

    This panel discussion brings together six experts in abortion care and advocacy to educate students, destigmatise abortion and highlight available services in South Australia. Students will have the opportunity to engage with experts in the field and discuss potential career pathways. 

  • Upcycling Adelaide closet

    The Upcycling Adelaide closet aims to provide free business and professional attire for students to support their job search, internships and new employment, enhancing their professional success.

    Clothing will be sustainably sourced from thrift shops and donations from the university community. 

  • Mental Health First Aid

    This grant provides 5 gift vouchers to incentivise Allied Health students to complete the online Mental Health First Aid training, which was recently funded by The Australian Council of Deans of Health Sciences.

    If you are an allied health student, complete the mental health first aid training via MyUni and automatically go into the draw to win one of 5 vouchers. 

  • October mental health running challenge

    The Women's Recreational Running Network are offering inclusive, twice weekly running or walking sessions during October with varied 3-5km routes.

    No prior running experience required - no one gets left behind!

    Join in 4 or more runs during October to connect with others, promote mental health awareness and go into the draw to win free running gear.

  • The "Only Woman in the Room" inaugural initiative

    A common occurrence within the field of engineering is being the only person in the room who is like you. This grant initiative aims to enhance the confidence, well-being, and sense of belonging in female and gender-diverse undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as academics, within the Faculty of SET. The initiative is in two parts:

    1. #I Am Remarkable workshops:
      • #IAmRemarkable is a global movement that empowers everyone, including underrepresented groups, to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond, while challenging the social perception around self-promotion.
      • There will be a series of these workshops over coming months, they are initially only for female-identifying and gender-diverse folk.
         
    2. A facilitated panel discussion event:
      • The event will consist of a panel discussion where local female/ gender diverse engineers (of various career stages/ disciplines/ sectors) will share their journeys, challenges, and successes.
      • The objective of this event is to provide an opportunity for our undergraduate and postgraduate students and including academic staff, to engage in meaningful conversations about strategies for building confidence and thriving in their engineering careers.
  • Multicultural celebration for School of Education

    A celebration of Cultural Diversity on United Nations Day.

    This is an opportunity for everyone in the School of Education to showcase and celebrate their culture and to learn about the culture of others through a variety of activities such as performances, cultural dress, art, music, dance, literature, poetry, food and exhibitions.  

    The event will include afternoon tea and cultural networking.

  • "Unmasking" photoshoot for neurodiverse students

    This one-time event offers neurodivergent students a private photoshoot where they can embrace and express their 'unmasked' selves.  

    Students can dress up, bring their own props, and take home up to 10 portraits on the day.

    The images can be utilised on their social media channels or to keep as empowering mementos. 

  • Study snacks

    Study snacks will be available for students at all PASS sessions during week 11.

    They will also be available to students to who access the Drop-in at the Maths Learning Centre and students who have appointments in the Writing Centre.

    Join a PASS session - they run at various times throughout the week. 

    View the timetable for specific course times.

    Otherwise, access the Maths Learning Centre or Writing Centre between 10 am to 4 pm in Week 11. 

  • Connecting Women in STEM - a cup of tea, paint n sip and communal artwork

    This event aims to bring women studying STEM subjects together to connect, build community and prioritise their wellbeing.

    Participants are to engage in individual and a communal artwork while conversing and community building in a low-pressure environment. 

  • HDR wellbeing network: forest bathing

    This forest bathing (or nature therapy) event invites HDR students to experience mindfulness and social connection through an evidence-based outdoor wellbeing practice. Hosted by Jana Norman, ANFT Certified Forest and Nature Therapy Guide.

    Comfortable shoes recommended and it may be sunny so bring water, hats, and sunscreen. After meeting at Hub Central, the group will walk together to the Botanic Gardens.

  • "Unwind your mind" at the library

    This grant will enable the library to refresh and expand the "Unwind your mind program" across all three campuses. Various activities will be available from Monday 28th of October to support student’s emotional and social wellbeing during Swotvac and exams. This semester's program includes:

    • FREE coffee, milo & tea at the Barr Smith, Law and Roseworthy Libraries.
    • Arts and crafts, including DIY macrame keyrings and Orbeez stress balls!
    • Oversized board games and colouring-in activities at all campus libraries.

    • Australian Lions Hearing Dogs visit: 11:00 am - 12:30 pm Wednesday 6 November 
    • A special FREE movie session (Ft. Inception): 3:00 pm, Thursday 31 October 2024 in the Tirkanthi Yangadlitya space, Level 1 Barr Smith Library
  • “Getting to know your internal protectors: the inner critic, the perfectionist and the imposter” workshop for music students

    “Getting to know your internal protectors: the inner critic, the perfectionist and the imposter” hosted by Minky Van Der Walt

    This 2-hour workshop will offer an approach to developing a connection with and understanding of some of the key internal protectors at play for performers: the inner critic, the perfectionist and the imposter.

    In this workshop students will:

    • Develop an understanding of these concepts and their purpose.
    • Develop a basic overview of polyvagal theory, the three key states of the nervous system and how this may impact individual performers.
    • Explore a range of strategies to understand and support students' individual needs as a performer.
    • Participate in immersive experiences to connect with the learning and develop new skills in supporting themselves.
  • English Language Centre: picnic

    A picnic with various games stations, food and music for students who attend the English Language Centre to connect. 

    November 17th, International Student Day.

  • Event series: HDR social science students

    This project enhances the sense of identity and community among social science postgraduate students through four diverse events including mini-golf, painting, yoga and a nature walk. 

  • TV fish tank display for student wellbeing @ Roseworthy

    This grant will enable a TV fish tank display to be installed at the Roseworthy College Kitchen.

    This display will feature a real aquarium, providing students with a calm and visually engaging focal point in the common area.

    Designated students will be responsible for the maintence and upkeep of the fish tank. 

    Keep an eye out in the Roseworthy Dining Hall for the new Fish. Coming later this year.

  • Bhangra / modern style dance class

    A Bhangra/Modern Style Dance Class designed to promote cultural diversity and physical activity on campus.

    Participants will learn traditional Bhangra footwork and modern dance choreography in an inclusive and energetic environment.
