Dr Vargas Falla is an interdisciplinary researcher specialising in the sociology of climate law and environmental governance. Her work covers the areas of everyday resistance, legal pluralism, informal economy, nature-based solution, care-based governance, and biodiversity loss. Dr Vargas Falla’s work bridges the sociology of law, human geography, and development studies, with a specific interest in plural knowledges – indigenous, traditional, and scientific – and their role in shaping inclusive policies for climate and biodiversity crises. Her work has been highlighted as one of the 10 Insights in Climate Science in 2024.
Collaborative research project
Dr Vargas Falla’s collaboration with University of Adelaide researched aims to establish a research and teaching engagement on the theme of the Pluriverse, addressing the double crises of biodiversity loss and climate change impacts through knowledge dialogues. Specifically, this collaborative project will explore How do indigenous groups in Australia and Colombia value nature's contributions to people, and how does their engagement in climate and biodiversity projects inform a comparative understanding of sustainable environmental governance? The collaboration will also pilot a plural knowledge lab methodology to bring diverse knowledges dilemmas of students around the biodiversity and climate change crises with a global perspective.
