Professor Ming Xu

Tsinghua University

Expertise

Professor Xu is an industrial ecologist and environmental systems engineer who studies life cycle environmental impacts of products and technologies. Professor Xu’s research vision is to provide an understanding of the environmental implications of our consumption, and technological systems to guide the transition towards a sustainable society.

Collaborative research project

Batteries are vital in facilitating a net-zero emission world, while battery production heavily relies on critical raw minerals sourced from a handful of countries. Conscious of the supply vulnerabilities, environmental concerns and social risks arising from this process, in collaboration with University of Adelaide colleagues, Professor Xu will:

  • analyse the dynamic material flows of key critical materials for different battery types for material demand projections,
  • establish a transparent life cycle inventory for the battery supply chain from mining, refining, production, trading, and use to end of life; and
  • develop mitigation strategies to reduce the life cycle environmental impact and increase the security of the battery supply chain.
