Things we don't have to do
Sometimes we forget that we don't actually have to do what everyone else is doing just because it's normal, or because it's been ingrained into our brains as a social norm since we were babies. To apologise for something, or to follow trends because social media said so, or hide your true self in fear of being judged.
Of course, there are things in life that are obvious you should do, like I don't know, just at the very least be a decent person to others. Be nice and compassionate. But a lot of people would be much happier if they were a tiny bit selfish every once in a while. It's good for you! Here's a list of things, we really don't have to do all the time.
- Force yourself to socialise when you're not feeling up to it
- Feel guilty or think you're selfish for saying no
- Explain yourself when you're feeling down and out
- Feel bad for taking a rest and not doing anything
- Bully or compare yourself to others especially on social media
- Follow trends just because everyone else is doing it
- Apologise when you aren't sorry
- Not eat something in fear of being judged
- Apologise for what you wear whether you're underdressed, overdressed, or even mismatched
- Having a different opinion or thinking differently. be gentle with others instead of apologetic
- Apologise for being yourself
- Apologise for changing your mind
- Apologise for a delayed response. whatever reason you have for not responding straight away whether its because of your mental health, family, physical health any other reason they don't have to know
- Apologise for forgetfulness
- Apologise for letting go of something or someone
- Be ashamed of something you love
- Hide your talents in fear of being judged
- Apologise for putting your mental and physical health first
- Apologise for having boundaries
- Explain why you're not drinking on a night out, and don't give in to peer pressure
- Hate your job or uni… it's completely normal to, but make a change if you need to
- Be disappointed by others or worry about disappointing people. Believe in yourself and meet your own expectations
- Be dismissive of change
- Be the best, just do what you can
- Be reliable to others
- Go to the gym or diet be healthy for you and find what works for you
- Like everyone, but don't be unkind
- Save things because of sentimental value
- Hide your successes
- Be mean in order to be funny or at all
- Underestimate yourself
- Hide your scars or be ashamed of your traumatic experiences or mental health, speak out
- Take things, or yourself, so seriously
- Compromise in order to please someone
- You don't have to make the bed or clean every day
- You don't have to get out of bed if you don't feel up to it
- Have it all figured out, nobody does
- Follow the path of others, make sure the path is your own
- Hold onto guilt or resentment
- Think that you’re alone.
