Some things I liked this month
Do you ever feel like we move on from things too quickly?
Like, we’ll laugh at a meme for a week and then before we could truly sit with it, another one comes around and we completely forget about the last one. This happens to other things too, of course, like music, TV shows, fashion trends, etc.
I feel like we move on from things too quickly because there’s so many things for us to consume. And the consumption is made easier with how accessible everything is – it’s right there, just click a button or swipe the screen and you’ve got it.
This has left me feeling dissatisfied with the way I consume things. Mainly by how quickly I forget about the things I enjoyed which is why I’ve started a monthly list of “things I liked this month” in my journal, to remind me of what brought me joy.
Here are some of them from this month’s list:
Two of Lana Del Rey’s songs: Margaret and Sweet Carolina.
I’ve had these two songs on repeat for almost a month now. I can’t stop listening to them on my commutes; on my walks; while I’m cooking; doing my laundry, you get the idea – I’m listening to them a lot. The funny thing is I’ve heard these songs before but never thought much of them until they were used in a TikTok slideshow of poems and quotes. That was what got me.
The Darjeeling Limited
Upon watching Asteroid City a couple of weeks ago, I decided to rewatch some of Wes Anderson’s earlier works. One of which was The Darjeeling Limited, a story about three brothers who goes on a train ride across India in an attempt to reconcile their relationship following the death of their father. It’s probably one of my favourite Wes Anderson movies, second to The Royal Tenenbaums.
The sunny weather
I reckon this would be on top of everyone’s “things I liked this month” list too.
My new KOOKAÏ top
I’m constantly on the hunt for elevated basic pieces, so when I saw someone wearing the Bec top from KOOKAÏ, I knew I had to get it. It’s merely a buttoned cardigan but instead of the buttons running down the middle, it runs down the side – basic, but different. I was really hoping it wouldn’t look flattering on me because I didn’t want to spend any more money on clothes but alas, it fit me perfectly and I fell in love. Thank goodness, it was on sale.
Poem by @badgersett on power
Someone on TikTok wrote a poem about power by juxtaposing the media’s reaction to the Submersible and the boat carrying refugees that sunk in Greece. Here is a verse from that poem: “Power never walked through the door wearing a crown – this is me! – it shone through the windows like the sun, deciding what to illuminate, what to leave in the shadows.”
So beautifully written.
Getting over my witness examination assignment
Nothing is more exciting than being over an assignment, especially if it’s an oral one. The nervousness I felt leading up to this assignment was expected but agonising – I wanted nothing more than to be over with it. So, when I finally got done asking my final questions to the witnesses, I was relieved and filled with joy.
