An ode to old playlists
This week, I have revisited some old playlists taking up space in my Spotify stream. I always keep my playlists, because I know one day I’ll go back and revisit a very specific time in my life. For instance, the playlist I carefully curated for my 18th birthday is an absolute gold mine. I can virtually taste the jelly shots when I listen to all the hottest hits of 2015.
My ‘SOUL TRAIN’ playlist takes me back to when I was too cool for new releases. Filled with 70’s tunes, I would make my way to my part time job at Target thinking I had the best music taste on Earth. I told everyone I could that the music ‘back then’ was just better. I was wrong.
As absurd as it is, I also went through an Australian rock phase. Somehow, ACDC, INXS and John Farnham make me reminisce about my time in Japan. I can picture myself tapping my foot while I sweated on the Tokyo subway (Japan’s Summer is hot).
Last summer, I only listened to Tame Impala’s album, Currents. I can’t listen to that album without thinking about that time basking in the sun.
Now, as I move through my current 80’s phase, I wonder how I’ll look back on this stage of my life when I rediscover and binge the playlist again.
I now have a sudden urge to find my old pink iPod Nano and see what life was like 10 years ago. Stay tuned.
