What is period poverty?

Period poverty refers to an inability to purchase menstrual care products, which is considered a significant obstacle to health, comfort and engagement with study. We know that poor menstrual management can impact people's emotional, physical and social health, and influence their ability to attend class. We want to normalise periods and eradicate the stigma and taboo that exists around menstruation.

The menstrual hygiene vending machine

Throughout 2023, the student health and wellbeing team distributed over 5000 pads and 3000 tampons to students in need across our campuses.

To further our commitment, we are excited to announce that we are piloting menstrual product vending machines in a limited number of locations for 3 years.

These machines will be accessible from the 28th of May 2024, coinciding with World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

The vending machines are located at the following locations:

1. Nexus 10 Building, North Terrace Campus - Basement Level
2. Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences Building (AHMS) 4 North Terrace - All gender bathroom on level 3, west side
3. Union Building, North Terrace Campus - Available once construction is complete.
4. Student Hub, Waite Campus - Next to existing vending machines
5. College Hub, Roseworthy Campus - Near female bathrooms

These machines are part of our ongoing effort to ensure that no student goes without menstrual products during their period.

Period products will continue to be available to students in bathrooms in the following locations:

1. The Ligertwood Building - Female Bathroom, levels 1, 2 and 5.
2. Ask Adelaide - Level 3, Hub Central.
3. Women's Room - Level 8, Hughes Building, North Terrace Campus
