This month we spoke to Associate Professor Adam Montagu, Director, Adelaide Health Simulation. Adam was one of four staff to receive a 2022 Stephen Cole the Elder Award for Excellence as part of last year’s Celebration of Learning and Teaching. He was also recognised at this event through the presentation of the Vice-Chancellors award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching for Outstanding and sustained demonstration of leadership in the enhancement of learning in Health and Medical Sciences. Here, Adam speaks to us about how he facilitates a safe learning environment for his students, and the learning theories which support and influence his teaching philosophy.

This month we spoke to Dr Stuart Johnson, Lecturer with the School of Mathematical Sciences and recent recipient of a Tony McMurtrie Practitioner Award for Academic Integrity (Special Commendation), for his work on reducing contract cheating in mathematical assessments. Stuart, an Affiliate member of the Adelaide Education Academy, speaks about the importance of active learning and how he has harnessed technology to engage and support his students.

This month we spoke to Associate Professor Claudia Szabo from the School of Computer Science about how she teaches the application of Complex Systems Theories in an engaging and interactive way. This month we spoke to Associate Professor Mathew White, interim Head of the School of Education within the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics. Mathew has a special interest in how leaders establish school cultures to encourage positive learning and wellbeing environments. He is well published in the areas of character education, international education, leading change, strategic planning, and wellbeing education. Mathew’s expertise in student wellbeing will be featured in his presentation at this year’s Festival of Learning and Teaching, where he will speak on Evidence-informed Strategies to Promote Belonging in Learning and Teaching.

This month we spoke to Associate Professor Benjamin (Ben) McCann, lecturer with the School of Humanities. Recognised for his outstanding teaching through Faculty, institutional and national teaching award schemes, including a 2021 Commendation for the Enhancement and Innovation of Teaching in the category of Promoting student wellbeing, Ben is a passionate and engaging teacher. Here he shares his thoughts on the use of technology increasing student engagement and the importance of encouraging multiple skill sets in future graduates.

This month we spoke to Dr Emma Muhlack, Associate Lecturer at the School of Public Health. In addition to lecturing, teaching and marking a number of courses across generalist public health, sociology of health, health systems, health ethics and research methods, Emma is the Course Co-Coordinator for Create. Communicate. Connect within Health and Medical Sciences, which teaches academic literacy skills for Health Sciences students. Emma is also an Affiliate Member of the Adelaide Education Academy (AEA).
She spoke to us about her student-centred approach to teaching and how it directs her teaching practice, which is based in skill development and student wellbeing.

This month we spoke to Dr Hong Cai, Scholarly Teaching Fellow within the School of Social Sciences. Hong teaches Chinese languages and linguistics to undergraduate students and translation theories and professional interpreting to MA students in the MAITTC program (Master of Arts [Interpretation, Translation and Transcultural Communication]). In 2019 she was presented with a Stephen Cole the Elder Award for Teaching Excellence, and was nominated for a Citation with the Australian Awards for University Teaching in 2021. She spoke to us about her passion for fostering learners’ autonomy and promoting career readiness and leadership with her students.
