Car and bike security
University Security keeps a majority of car and bike parks under CCTV observation, but responsibility for the security of bikes, vehicles and their contents rests with the owners.
Keep yourself and your vehicle safe at night:
- Park in well-lit, heavily populated areas
- Trust your instincts, if something doesn't feel right, find another place to park
- If you intend to stay at the University late at night, arrange a Security Escort to walk you to your bike or vehicle
- Carry a mobile phone or take note of emergency phones near where you have parked in case you need to use them
- Do not leave valuable items in your car
- Always roll up windows and lock doors when leaving your vehicle.
To protect your bicycle and reduce the likelihood of it being stolen:
- Use a D-Lock and park in a secure bike cage
- Lock both wheels and the frame to a bike rack
- Do not leave bicycles on campus grounds overnight
- Get your bike engraved by SAPOL to help track it down if it gets stolen
- Keep a photo of your bike and a copy of the bike's serial number to aid in identification and recovery if it gets stolen.
